Over the years the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medicine has become increasingly important, as it allows researchers to solve complex problems that would otherwise be difficult, if not impossible! One field in medicine that has implemented changes thanks to AI is diagnosis. Here, deep-learning neural networks screen through big data, extracting associations between a patient¨s condition and possible causes. In dermatology, for example it is used to detect skin abnormalities such as carcinomas. Today, there are apps that can take a picture of the skin abnormality and send it direct to a doctor. In the future, these apps will most probably go as far as pre-diagnosing skin abnormalities without human intervention. In a nutshell, AI has the capability to analyse links between prevention or treatment techniques and patient outcomes.

Find out more about how AI is impacting medicine, as well as research on future applications, within this dedicated virtual issue. It brings together a selection of free articles and chapters from a variety of 50業子 journals and books.
