Technology has changed society and the environment since the onset of industrialization. 50Ȼ’s oldest Engineering books date back to about 170 years ago. Our comprehensive Engineering eBook collection continues this tradition.

While works from early authors such as Werner von Siemens and Rudolf Diesel, are still of great importance, 50Ȼ works with a number of notable current day authors that have contributed to this collection. Amongst them are Swiss scientist and professor of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology EPFL, Sandro Carrara, who is known for his pioneering work in , as well as the former director of the National Institute of Metrological Research and former member of the New York Academy of Sciences, Italian professor Alberto Carpinteri, who was awarded the Giuliano Preparata Award, assigned by the Condensed Matter Nuclear Science for the studies on Low Energy Nuclear Reactions published in the book "".

The 50Ȼ Engineering eBook Collection is one of the largest available collections. It covers all the traditional fields of engineering that have moved on from the academic phase into industrial application.

From Quantum Technology to Mechanical Engineering and Sustainability

The collection displays large diversity in all classical fields of engineering as well as new ones like Cyper-physical Systems, represented by the “Springer Handbook of Internet of Things” or Quantum Technologies, to be found for example in the second edition of the textbook “Introduction to Quantum Computing”. There is a focus on mechanics textbooks, with any new editions, e.g. “Fluid Mechanics for Mechanical Engineers” or “Thermal Stresses in Plates and Shells”.

The increasing importance of sustainability to economic development worldwide has prompted innovations in mechanical engineering. The lates advances and innovative practices in the field are covered in our Mechanical Engineering Collection

Sustainability and energy are topics that are covered widely in the collection, as well as “Sustainable Engineering”. The strong Springer tradition in engineering design is perpetuated by “The Design and Development Process”. Other significant clusters in 2024 are on Marine Engineering and Navigation, e.g. “Essentials of Navigation” and Bioengineering, e.g. "Significant and Nonsignificant Risk Medical Devices".

How impactful is the Engineering Collection?

5 most downloaded eBook Collections

The Engineering Collection ranks third among the top five collections with the highest downloads, showing an annual average usage of 11,823 downloads in the first year. This is followed by the Professional and Applied Computing and Medicine Collections.

Key topics within the Engineering eBook Collection include:

  • Communications Engineering Networks
  • Circuits and Systems
  • Signal, Image and Speech Processing
  • Manufacturing, Machines, Tools and Processes
    growth of citations engineering_small
  • Computational Intelligence

Books in this collection are highly-cited and the number of citations is steadily increasing. Since 2015, citations have increased from 18,020 to 32,312 and is showing an upward trend for the future.

From textbooks to proceedings: books for every stage and field of research

Our in-house editors work with experts in the field to identify and publish the latest research developments in engineering and technology.

Proceedings provide the first insight into new topics and therefore it is no surprise that this book type accounts for 46% of books in this collection. This is followed by monographs and contributed volumes which help to provide a deeper understanding of the emerging fields of research.

The collection’s contemporary scope encompasses the classical areas of Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil Engineering in their broadest sense. It also highlights the interdisciplinary applications between these fields and extends beyond their traditional boundaries, driven by the latest research results and innovations in Communications, Biology and Medicine, and even Social Sciences.

New and emerging research areas covered in this collection include:

  • Communications Engineering and Networks
  • Additive Manufacturing
  • Safety and Security
  • AI Applications in Engineering

Artificial Intelligence (AI) became an enabling technology for engineering applications comparable to Computational (Numerical) methods. Hence, it can be found in many of the new engineering books without even being mentioned in the title. Since AI has become a research field in its own right, books about theoretical foundations and ethical implications can be found in our AI eBook Collection

The collection also caters to students with its rich set of textbooks, matching the diverse curricula of various engineering disciplines. For both students and practitioners, this eBook collection offers books like “Lighting Technology” and provides deep insights with titles such as “China’s e-Science Blue Book 2023” by the Chinese Academy of Science and other relevant government institutions.
